I hope you are feeling as optimistic as I am, now that the lockdown has been eased and non-essential shops are re-opening today in many parts of the UK...

Before the lockdown, my guest for this episode of #ThisMamaCanThisMamaWil- Leanne was a self-employed photographer.Covid-19 affected her massively, but inspired her to open another business with her partner, to pay the bills. So now she is going into the new normal, with two fairly successful businesses, three kids and wishing for a 48 hour day... She is the epitome of turning lemons into lemonades, well in her case she turned them into lemon sweets.

Leanne's latest venture, Candy Land delivers sweet boxes in and around Surrey,United Kingdon. Why not taste and see for yourself?

We had problems recording the session, in fact we had to re-record it  a couple times due to technical issues but Shola took it all in her stride. Through this process I discovered that she is not only humble but very patient and compassionate.

Hey! I hope you are well and safe. My name is Kafy Afolarin and I am the founder of Excellent Yummy Mummy (Awards),I have been having an amazing time speaking to exceptional mums in business- finding out how the pandemic has affected their businesses and their plan post Covid-19 so it’s only fair that I share with you right?

In these uncertain times, one thing remains constant-CHANGE. Yes, and our ability to adapt as mothers has been tested even more so during the pandemic. We have had to decide whether to send our children back to school or keep them at home, juggle homeschooling with working from home and much more... This is what piqued my curiosity in finding out how mothers in business(most still doing a day job) are coping during this period.

First episode of the blog/podcast series #thismamacanthismamawill starts on Monday 8th June 2020- my hope is that it motivates and inspires you as the lockdown slowly eases...

MEET THE FINALISTS: Esther Palmer

Posted on 6 May, 2020 at 10:45 Comments comments (60)

NOMINATION CATEGORIES: EXCELLENCE IN CREATIVE ARTS & INSPIRATIONAL MOTHER OF THE YEAR

A mother and woman of many talents raised with core family and Christian values, Esther is devoted to upholding these values in everything she does. Photography and creative writing are her passions through which she expresses herself and all the struggles she has had to face and scaled. While comedy and charity work provided an outlet for her to showcase her funny bones and charity work is a way of giving back to society.

For Esther Palmer, photography is not just taking pictures but it must tell a story. Her writings mostly captured her struggle as a mother of five lovely children, one of which was born with Spinal Bifida. Her special need son Vincent was born with multi needs, he's had 16 surgery already and trying very hard to settle well in school after two of the major surgeries he had in 2016 and 2017.

Her having to juggle motherhood and work yet trying to give her children the balance they need for both their emotional and physical development captures and strengthens her spiritual side. As a comedienne, she organises comedy shows under the stage name of Ojuolape Iya Labule where folks come to unwind and have a good laugh and proper fun devoid of profanity.

Esther also comperes events as an MC. She has always believed that when you are blessed then it is necessary for you to give back to the community. According to her, you don't have to be a Bill Gates or Warren Buffetts of this world before you do this. She holds firmly to the belief that in one's own little way, it's essential to give back and put a smile on people's faces. Presently and through inspiration she got from friends and associates, she has started making beauty products sourced primarily from organic products and she plans to expand the ranges in near future.

Esther's primary, secondary and higher education were done in Lagos Nigeria where she is from and she has had opportunities of furthering her education in photography and media since she relocated to London (where she is currently based) in spite of her busy schedule.

MEET THE FINALISTS: Ruth Davies

Posted on 9 April, 2020 at 0:45 Comments comments (0)

NOMINATION CATEGORY-INSPIRATIONAL MOTHER OF THE YEAR

Ruth remembers thinking 40 was an extremely old sort of age as, at age 10, she watched her own parents celebrate the big four oh... However... With her own first baby turning one decade old she herself got the 'life begins at' card and with it she takes herself, and the whole Rocknrollerbaby gang, on more adventures with her blog and Instagram thinking that very definitely, 40 is no age at all as it turns out!

The mother of three, wife and blogger started Rockernrollerbaby blog as a way of journaling all the fun things she gets up to- family life, products which assist with her and family's day to day and anything which pops into her mind! However, her opinionated and in your face approach to blogging quiclky earned her a massive following.

With muchos, muchos planned in the pipeline she feels that almost certainly it's true what they say and this really is just where life begins! MAMMA / ACTOR / WRITER - One book, two plays, an armful of skits and characters on Instagram as well as a blog with constant fresh content, she 's defintely worth following  @Rocknrollerbaby to see the adventures unravel!

MEET THE FINALISTS- Lade Olugbemi

Posted on 1 April, 2020 at 3:30 Comments comments (1)

NOMINATION CATEGORY:  EXCELLENCE IN THE SCIENCES

Lade Olugbemi is a lawyer and a manager working for one of the Local Authorities in London, UK.

She is passionate about mental wellbeing. She serves on the board, delivery groups and operational panels of several governmental initiatives. This exposure highlighted the major gap in information held about mental well-being and illness in the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities in the UK.

Lade has won several awards and has been recognised both nationally and internationally for the works she does to raise awareness of mental health issues in the communities.

She is an internationally recognised motivational speaker, mentor and a life coach.

She graduated from the Ondo State University, Nigeria in 1987 with a degree in English Language. She went back to University after 16 years in 2003 to study a profession she had always wanted to study, Law. She obtained her LLB in 2007 from the University of Wolverhampton specialising in Business and Commercial Law. Her passion and natural instinctive flair to advocate for people especially patients or service users that have had reasons to be in the health and social care sector was generated when she worked as a support worker in in organisations that worked with people with challenges living independently. The stigma patients encounter in the community; the lack of understanding of the presentation of certain ethnicities amongst the clinical teams; the secrecy that families wanted around information about relatives that are diagnosed with enduring and lifelong mental illness; the lack of information within the BAME communities on how to support friends, relatives and colleagues who present with symptoms of mental imbalance encouraged her to study further and she proceeded to enroll for the Masters in Law. Her major was in Human Right Law with a deep slant of study on the rights of the vulnerable persons under the Mental Health Acts. She completed her LLM with distinction in 2009.

According to Lade; stigma, negative labelling and stereotyping are major barriers for most persons from the BAME in accessing support early. This makes early intervention impossible and therefore recovery takes longer.

‘Lade will like to see policies changed reflecting the needs of the BAME communities; awareness about mental health illness and mental wellbeing.; recognition and knowledge of services out there that people experiencing mental health difficulties can access for early intervention.

She is the CEO of The NOUS Organisation, a registered not for profit company raising awareness through workshops, seminars and community work.

She is also a Mental Health First Aid Instructor and she delivers mental first aid training in the communities.

Nous is a Greek word meaning, MIND.

She is also a director of REOPASS, a Family Navigating Organisation supporting families in crisis, and working with victims who have suffered domestic abuse.

She is a multiple award winner, and international public speaker, she has spoken at various national and international platforms influencing policies and changing lives.

Her life is dedicated to changing policies nationally and internationally and moving age old mindsets on the care, treatment and causes for mental health and wellbeing.

Lade is a voice to the voiceless.
